RESUMO

Sacha inchi seed oil is a food matrix rich in bioactive constituents, mainly polyunsaturated fatty acids. In this study, the characteristics of color, carotenoid content, tocopherols, and volatile aroma compounds in eight sacha inchi seed (Plukenetia volubilis L.) oil accessions were evaluated. Results showed that the oil obtained from the accessions presented a lightness and chroma of 91 to 98 units and 6 to 10 units respectively, while the hue angle ranged between 93 to 97 units. The total carotenoid content in the different accessions ranged from 0.6 to 1.5 mg/kg, while γ- and δ-tocopherol ranged from 861.6 to 1142 mg/kg and 587 to 717.1 mg/kg. In addition, the total content of tocopherols varied between 1450 and 1856 mg/kg and the δ/γ ratio ranged between 0.58 and 0.70. The oils from the accessions PER000408 (861 µg/kg) and PER000411 (896 µg/kg) were those with the higher volatile concentration, especially 1-hepten-3-ol, 2-nonanol, (E)-3-hexen- 1-ol, (E)-2-hexenal, and 1-hexanol. In this study, the variability of the oil obtained from 8 accessions were observed, from which promising accessions can be selected for continuous investigations of the new sacha inchi seed genotypes.

Mauritia flexuosa, known as buriti in Brazil, is a widespread palm tree in Amazonia. It has many ethnobotanical uses, including food, oil, and medicine. The oil obtained from buriti's fruit pulp has high levels of monounsaturated fatty acids, carotenoids, and tocopherols, and is used in the food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical industries for its antioxidant properties. Many biological activities have been reported for buriti oil, such as antioxidant, antimicrobial, chemopreventive, and immunomodulatory. Due to its high content of bioactive compounds, buriti oil is considered a functional ingredient with possible benefits in preventing oxidative stress and chronic diseases, particularly in the gastrointestinal tract. Peptic ulcer disease is a multifactorial disorder, involving lesions in the stomach and duodenum mucosa, which has a complex healing process. In this context, some nutrients and bioactive compounds help the maintenance of gastrointestinal mucosal integrity and function, such as carotenoids, tocopherols, and unsaturated fatty acids, which makes buriti oil an interesting candidate to be used in the prevention and management of gastrointestinal diseases. This study aimed to evaluate the gastroprotective and antiulcer effects of buriti oil and its possible mechanisms of action. Buriti oil reduced the ulcerative area and lipid peroxidation induced by ethanol. The gastroprotective activity of buriti oil partially depends on nitric oxide and sulfhydryl compounds. In acetic acid-induced gastric ulcers, buriti oil accelerated healing and stimulated the formation of new gastric glands. These results demonstrated the potential of buriti oil as a functional ingredient to promote health benefits in the gastrointestinal tract.

Popcorn is a specialty maize variety with popping abilities. Although considered a snack, popcorn flakes provide a variety of benefits for the human diet. To evaluate the change in content of bioactive compounds in response to microwave popping, the kernels and flakes of twelve popcorn hybrids were assayed. Accordingly, the content of phytic acid, glutathione, phenolic compounds, carotenoids, and tocopherols, as well as the antioxidant activity, were evaluated. In all evaluated popcorn hybrids, the most pronounced significant average decrease of 71.94% was observed for GSH content, followed by 57.72% and 16.12% decreases for lutein + zeaxanthin and phytic acid content, respectively. In response to popping, in the majority of the evaluated hybrids, the most pronounced significant average changes of a 63.42% increase and a 27.61% decrease were observed for DPPH, followed by a 51.52% increase and a 24.48% decrease for ß-carotene, as well as, a 48.62% increase and a 16.71% decrease for α-Tocopherol content, respectively. The applied principal component and hierarchical cluster analyses revealed the distinct separation of popcorn hybrids' kernels and flakes, indicating the existence of a unique linkage of changes in bioactive compound content in response to popping.

BACKGROUND: Despite the various anticancer activities of tocopherols, little is known about tocopherols associated with lung cancer risk among low-income African Americans (AA) and European Americans (EA) who are disproportionately affected by the disease. METHODS: We conducted a nested case-control study that included 209 incident lung cancer cases and 406 matched controls within the Southern Community Cohort Study. Using biospecimens collected at cohort enrollment, plasma levels of α-, ß/γ-, δ-, and total-tocopherols were measured by high-performance liquid chromatography with photodiode array detection. Conditional logistic regression was used to estimate ORs and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for lung cancer risk after adjusting for potential confounders. Stratified analyses were also conducted. RESULTS: Plasma levels of total-tocopherols were inversely associated with lung cancer risk overall [OR (95% CI) for the highest vs. lowest tertile = 0.51 (0.30-0.90)]. The inverse association remained significant among EAs [0.20 (0.06-0.65)], men [0.43 (0.21-0.90)], current smokers [0.49 (0.26-0.93)], and cases diagnosed within 2 years of blood draw [0.36 (0.15-0.86)], though we did not find a significant risk reduction among AAs [0.75 (0.39-1.45)]. Notably, we found significant interactions between α-tocopherol and race after controlling the FDR to correct for multiple comparisons (Pinteraction = 0.02). CONCLUSIONS: Our results indicate that plasma total-tocopherols are inversely associated with lung cancer risk, but the association may differ across specific isomeric forms of tocopherols, race, or other individuals' characteristics. Further large-scale studies are warranted to confirm our findings. IMPACT: Recommendations on tocopherols for lung cancer prevention should take isomers, race, and smoking behaviors into consideration.

Hot-pressed rapeseed oils with pleasant flavor, i.e., fragrant rapeseed oils, are favored by consumers, especially people from the southwest provinces of China. Although degumming is an important section in producing edible rapeseed oils, conventional degumming techniques are generally suffered from disadvantages such as moisture control, and large losses of micronutrients and flavors. In the present paper, hot-pressed rapeseed oils were treated with silica hydrogel to remove their gums, and changes in phospholipids, acid values, peroxide values, tocopherols, total phenols, and flavor compounds were analyzed to compare the silica hydrogel-degumming with conventional methods. The optimized conditions were suggested to be carried out at 45°C for 15 min, and the silica hydrogel dosage was 1.10%. More than 97.00% of phospholipids were removed after the degumming, and more than 85.00% of micronutrients, were retained in the treated oils. The degumming efficiency was therefore significantly higher than those operated by conventional acid degumming and soft degumming techniques. It was found that the dosage of the silica hydrogel significantly affected the removal rate of phospholipids compared with degumming time and temperature. There were nearly typical volatile compounds found in the rapeseed oils, while most of them kept almost stable after the silica hydrogel-degumming. In this regard, silica hydrogel adsorption exhibited little effect on volatile compounds, making it more suitable for the production of fragrant rapeseed oils.

Extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) is a valuable product and is highly appreciated by consumers for its great nutritional value. However, to date, there has been a lack of uniform systems capable of ranking the nutritional value of EVOO based on its chemical composition in terms of macro- and micronutrients (including phenolic compounds and tocopherols). The aim of this study was to propose a scoring algorithm to rank the nutritional value of EVOO samples, considering their chemical composition in macro- and micronutrients and their sensitivity to oxidation phenomena. Data from more than 1000 EVOO samples were used to assess the variability of the data, considering the selected negative parameters (free acidity, peroxide value, spectrophotometric indices) and positive components (composition in tocopherols via HPLC-DAD, phenolic compounds via HPLC-DAD, and fatty acids via GC-MS) so as to ensure the universal validity of the scoring algorithm. The dataset included samples from the main producing countries worldwide, in addition to Australia, across several production years; data were selected to represent different production realities. A mathematical model was set up for each chemical component, resulting in six variable values. By combining these values with a dimensionless constant value, the algorithm for computing the nutritional value score (NVS) was defined. It allows the nutritional value of an oil to be ranked on a scale of 0 to 100 based on its chemical composition. The algorithm was then successfully tested using chemical data from about 300 EVOO samples obtained from laboratories from different Italian regions. The proposed NVS is a simple and objective tool for scoring the nutritional value of an EVOO, easy to understand for both producers and consumers.

BACKGROUND: A new enzymatic hydrolysis-based process inspired by the Maillard reaction can produce strong flavored, high-value rapeseed oil that meets safety requirements. In the present study, the effect of reaction time (10-30 min) and temperature (130-160 °C) on the physicochemical properties, nutritional status, fatty acids composition and key aroma compounds of fragrant rapeseed oil (FRO) was investigated. RESULTS: An increasing reaction time and temperature substantially decreased the total tocopherol, polyphenol and sterol contents of FRO, but increased benzo[a]pyrene content, as well as the acid and peroxide values, which did not exceed the European Union legislation limit. Among the volatile components, 2,5-dimethyl was the main substance contributing to the barbecue flavor of FRO. The 150 °C for 30 min reaction conditions produced a FRO with a strong, fragrant flavor, with high total tocopherol (560.15 mg kg-1 ), polyphenol (6.82 mg kg-1 ) and sterol (790.65 mg kg-1 ) contents; acceptable acid (1.60 mg g-1 ) and peroxide values (4.78 mg g-1 ); and low benzo[a]pyrene (1.39 mg g-1 ) content. These were the optimal conditions for the enzymatic Maillard reaction, according to the principal component analysis. Furthermore, hierarchical cluster analysis showed that reaction temperature had a stronger effect on FRO than reaction time. CONCLUSION: The optimal enzymatic Maillard reaction conditions for the production of FRO are heating at 150 °C for 30 min. These findings provide new foundations for better understanding the composition and flavor profile of FRO, toward guiding its industrial production. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

This study was planned to detect the adverse pathological consequences of aflatoxin B1 in White Leghorn (WLH) layer breeder males. Eight-week-old male layer cockerels were separated into six experimental categories: A group was kept as negative control, offered with normal feed only; group B was fed with 400 ppb amount of aflatoxin, while groups F and D fed with normal feed and supplemented with vitamin E 100 ppm and 1% Moringa oleifera, respectively, whereas groups E and C were fed with 400 ppb aflatoxin containing feed and ameliorated with vitamin E 100 ppm and 1% Moringa oleifera, respectively. This study was continued for 2 months and immunologic disorders and reproductive parameters were observed during the trial. To find out immunological status lymphoproliferative response to phytohemagglutinin-P (PHA-P), antibody titers against sheep red blood cells (SRBCs) and carbon clear assay were performed by collecting samples from five birds from each group. The whole data was measured by ANOVA test, and group means were compared by DMR test by using M-Stat C software. Regarding the reproductive status, spermatogenesis, blood testosterone level, testes weight, testes histology, sperm motility, and morphology were negatively affected by aflatoxins, but these deviations positively ameliorated by vitamin E and Moringa. Vitamin E and Moringa found advantageous in boosting the immune status of affected bird. All the immunological parameters including antibody titers against sheed red blood cells, lymphoproliferative response to avian tuberculin and phagocytic potential of macrophages were suppressed by AFB1 however in control, Moringa and vitamin E groups these immunological responses were significantly higher.

Anticancer effects of vitamin E (tocopherols) have been studied extensively. While in vitro and animal studies showed promising results regarding anticancer effects of tocopherols, human intervention studies failed to reproduce these results. In vivo, α-tocopherol (α-TOH) is metabolized to the long-chain metabolites (LCM) 13'-hydroxychromanol (α-13'-OH) and 13'-carboxychromanol (α-13'-COOH), which likely reach the large intestine. The LCM showed antiproliferative effects in different colon cancer cell lines, but the exact mechanism of action remains unclear. To further clarify the chemopreventive action of the LCM, premalignant LT97 colon adenoma cells were treated with α-TOH, α-13'-OH and α-13'-COOH to study their impact on growth, apoptosis, antigenotoxicity, and ROS-scavenging capacity as well as expression of selected genes involved in detoxification and the cell cycle. Growth inhibitory potential was observed for α-13'-OH (IC50: 37.4 µM) and α-13'-COOH (IC50: 5.8 µM) but not for α-TOH in the tested concentrations. Levels of caspase-3 activity and expression of genes regulating the cell cycle and detoxification remained unchanged. However, α-TOH, α-13'-OH and α-13'-COOH exhibited antigenotoxic and partly ROS-scavenging capacity. The results indicate that the LCM exert chemopreventive effects via ROS-scavenging capacity, the protection against DNA damage and the induction of cell death via caspase-independent mechanisms in premalignant colon cells.

Walnut oils were obtained by supercritical carbon dioxide extraction (SCB), cold-pressing (CP), hexane extraction (HE), and subcritical butane extraction (SBE), and walnut protein isolates (WPI) from the walnut cakes were performed. The results indicate that SCB has the highest oil yield for walnut oil, which was 62.72%, and the total content of trace nutrients (total tocopherols, total phytosterols, and total phenolic compounds) in SCB-walnut oil was also the highest at 2186.75 mg/kg, approximately 1.05 times higher than CP-walnut oil and 1.21 times higher than SBE-walnut oil. Meanwhile, the treatment of WPI with SCB results in a decrease in ß-Sheet and α-Helix structures and an increase in ß-Turn and Random coil structures. Thereby increasing its oil-holding capacity (OHC) and solubility by approximately 1.16 times and 1.27 times compared to CP, respectively. Interestingly, SCB as a green oil production technology, also has good prospects for retaining WPI functionality characteristics.

Pumpkin seed oil (PSO), a rich source of nutrients, is extracted from the seeds of different pumpkin varieties for food and medicines. This article aims to provide an evidence-based review of the literature and to explore the extraction technologies, nutritional properties, and biological activity of PSO. From previous literature, PSO contains a large proportion of unsaturated fatty acids, with linoleic acid as the main component, and an amount of tocopherol, phytosterol, and phenolic acids. Some differences in the yield, composition, and physicochemical properties of PSO can be associated with the pumpkin's cultivars and the extraction methods. Some novel technologies involved in supercritical fluid extraction, enzyme-assisted aqueous extraction, and ultrasound-assisted extraction have been replacing the conventional technologies gradually as promising methods for the safe, non-polluting, and effective recovery of PSO. This healthy vegetable oil was reported by several in vitro and in vivo studies to have potential protective roles in oxidative stress, inflammation, cancer, and cardiovascular diseases. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Chicken oil is prone to oxidation due to the high content of unsaturated fatty acids. The interaction of antioxidants was affected by their concentration, ratio, and reaction system. In this article, mixtures of zeaxanthin and tocopherols (α-tocopherol and γ-tocopherol) were chosen to enhance the oxidative stability of chicken oil. The antioxidation of zeaxanthin with tocopherols was analyzed using the Rancimat test, the free radical scavenging capacity and the Schaal oven test (the variation of antioxidant content, PV and shelf life prediction). The optimal concentration of zeaxanthin determined by Rancimat in chicken oil was 20 mg/kg. The binary mixtures have a strong synergistic effect in the ABTS experiment, and the clearance rate was up to 99%, but antagonistic effect in ORAC. The degree of synergism between zeaxanthin and tocopherols was determined by ratio. The interaction between zeaxanthin and α-tocopherol was synergistic, while the types of interaction between zeaxanthin and γ-tocopherol were affected by concentration. The main synergistic interaction mechanism was the regeneration of tocopherol by zeaxanthin. Synergistic combinations of zeaxanthin with α-tocopherol and γ-tocopherol played a key role in the primary oxidation stage of the lipid. The best synergistic combination was A3 (zeaxanthin+α-tocopherol: 15+50 23 mg/kg), which could extend the shelf life of chicken oil (92.46 d) to 146.93 days. This work provides a reference for zeaxanthin and tocopherol to improve the oxidative stability of animal fat.

γ-tocophérol methyltransferase (GTMT), a key enzyme in the tocopherols biosynthesis pathway, is involved in the conversion of δ- and l'γ-tocophérol to ß- et l'α-tocophérol, respectively. In fact, it plays an important role in the α-tocopherol composition and the quality of olive oil. A total of 14 olive tree cultivars (Olea Europaea L.) were chosen and used in this study. They were sampled from different regions of Tunisia. Four cultivars from four Mediterranean regions (Greece, Algeria, Morocco, and Spain) were included for comparison. For each variety, DNA was extracted from young leaves. The Vte4 gene was PCR amplified from the 14 olive varieties and verified by electrophoresis on a 2% agarose gel for each variety. DNA sequencing of the olive cultivars revealed several single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Statistical and bioinformatics analysis  draw attention to some associations between some of the SNPs, tocopherols contents and oleic acid content. In fact, two significant associations are obtained between SUBS24 and both Total-Tocopherols and Beta-Tocopherol. Moreover, dendrograms reveals that there is a correlation between genetic variability and chemical characteristics which make the Vte4 gene more interesting in terms of tocopherols levels.

The effect of the antioxidant activity of α-tocopherol incorporated into different carriers on the oxidative stability of oil in water emulsion was investigated. The antioxidant activity of free and encapsulated α-tocopherol was measured in a 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl reaction. Apart from α-tocopherol micelles, the samples showed similar antioxidant activity. The number of primary oxidation products in the emulsion with tocopherol liposomes and niosomes was lower than in the emulsion with micelles. During storage, the lipid peroxides gradually increased, whereas in emulsion with no α-tocopherol carriers added they remained constant. The content of the conjugated dienes first increased, and after 14 days at the end of testing time it remained stable in both types of emulsions. Our results might suggest that α-tocopherol when encapsulated into carriers exhibits lower antioxidant activity. The results obtained could be due to the better solubility of α-tocopherol in lipid droplets and thus the lower availability for the interfacial region, which is thought to be the place of the most pronounced lipid oxidation.

The presence of hydrogen peroxide along with ferrous iron produces hydroxyl radicals that preferably oxidize polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) to alkyl radicals (L•). The reaction of L• with an oxygen molecule produces lipid peroxyl radical (LOO•) that collectively trigger chain reactions, which results in the accumulation of lipid peroxidation products (LOOH). Oxygenase enzymes, such as lipoxygenase, also stimulate the peroxidation of PUFA. The production of phospholipid hydroperoxides (P-LOOH) can result in the destruction of the architecture of cell membranes and ultimate cell death. This iron-dependent regulated cell death is generally referred to as ferroptosis. Radical scavengers, which include tocopherol and nitric oxide (•NO), react with lipid radicals and terminate the chain reaction. When tocopherol reductively detoxifies lipid radicals, the resultant tocopherol radicals are recycled via reduction by coenzyme Q or ascorbate. CoQ radicals are reduced back by the anti-ferroptotic enzyme FSP1. •NO reacts with lipid radicals and produces less reactive nitroso compounds. The resulting P-LOOH is reductively detoxified by the action of glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) or peroxiredoxin 6 (PRDX6). The hydrolytic removal of LOOH from P-LOOH by calcium-independent phospholipase A2 leads the preservation of membrane structure. While the expression of such protective genes or the presence of these anti-oxidant compounds serve to maintain a healthy condition, tumor cells employ them to make themselves resistant to anti-tumor treatments. Thus, these defense mechanisms against ferroptosis are protective in ordinary cells but are also potential targets for cancer treatment.

The relationship between vitamin E intake or circulating α-tocopherol and various health outcomes is still debatable and uncertain. We conducted an umbrella review to identify the relationships between vitamin E intake or circulating tocopherol and health outcomes by merging and recalculating earlier meta-analyses. The connections that were found to be statistically significant were then classified into different evidence levels based on p values, between-study heterogeneity, prediction intervals, and small study effects. We finally included 32 eligible meta-analyses with four vitamin E sources and 64 unique health outcomes. Only the association between circulating α-tocopherol and wheeze or asthma in children was substantiated by consistent evidence. Suggestive evidence was suggested for seven results on endothelial function (supplemental vitamin E): serum C-reactive protein (CRP) concentrations (supplemental vitamin E), cervical cancer (dietary vitamin E), esophageal cancer (dietary vitamin E), cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN, dietary vitamin E), pancreatic cancer (total vitamin E intake), and colorectal cancer (circulating α-tocopherol levels); all of these showed a protective effect consistent with the vitamin E source. In conclusion, our work has indicated that vitamin E is protective for several particular health outcomes. Further prospective studies are required when other factors that may contribute to bias are considered.

BACKGROUND: Chronic radiation proctitis (CRP) is a long-term complication of pelvic radiotherapy that manifests as rectal bleeding, diarrhoea, fistula formation and obstruction. Treatments such as endoscopic argon plasma coagulation, hyperbaric oxygen therapy and rectal topical formalin have imposed a significant medical burden on CRP patients. In contrast, oral therapies offer a more accessible and acceptable option for managing CRP. Here, we conducted a systematic review of the efficacy of oral treatments for CRP to assess their potential as an effective and convenient treatment option for this condition. METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, PubMed, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure and Chinese VIP in February 2021. We included post-radiotherapy participants with CRP that compared oral medicine alone or in combination with other treatments versus control treatments. The primary outcomes were bleeding, diarrhoea and symptom score. Heterogeneity between studies was checked using Cochrane Q test statistics and I2 test statistics. The Cochrane risk-of-bias tool was used to assess the quality of the included studies. RESULTS: We included 10 randomised controlled trials (RCTs) and 1 retrospective study with 898 participants. Three placebo-controlled trials evaluated the effects of oral sucralfate on CRP, with meta-analysis showing no significant different with placebo arm. Four trials on TCM demonstrated significant improvement of symptoms, especially for the 3 trials on oral TCM drinks. Retinyl palmitate and high-fibre diet were found to reduce rectal bleeding. The combination of oral pentoxifylline and tocopherol did not significantly change the process of CRP. CONCLUSIONS: Our study implies that oral TCM drinks, retinyl palmitate and a high-fiber diet showed significant improvement in CRP symptoms, but not with the combination of oral pentoxifylline and tocopherol. Further multicentre, larger-scale RCTs are needed to confirm the efficacy and safety of these treatments and optimize treatment strategies, ultimately improving the quality of life for patients with CRP.

PURPOSE: To assess the prophylaxis effect of pentoxifylline and tocopherol (PENTO) on the frequency and severity of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) diagnosed at three months in patients with cancer submitted to tooth extractions during the treatment with bone-modifying agents. METHODS: This case series was conducted at the outpatient dental clinic of the Instituto de Medicina Integral Prof. Fernando Figueira (IMIP) between April 2021 and April 2022. Patients ≥ 18 years old were included; those with maxillary metastasis or who performed head or neck radiotherapy were excluded. The PENTO protocol was prescribed two weeks before and two weeks after the tooth extraction, and patients were reassessed one week, one month, and three months after the extraction. The main outcome was the development of MRONJ. RESULTS: Of the 114 screened patients, 17 were included; they were aged between 43 and 73 years and were mostly female (88.2%). Thirty-two tooth extractions were performed (22 in the maxilla and 10 in the mandible). Breast cancer was the most predominant neoplasm (70.6%), being metastatic in 35.3% of patients. Also, all patients used intravenous bisphosphonates. Stage 1 MRONJ was diagnosed in three patients (17.6%), representing three (9.4%) of all tooth extractions. The repair of MRONJ was achieved 30 days after the PENTO protocol. CONCLUSION: The prophylaxis use of PENTO reduced the severity of injuries, was well-tolerated, and showed patient compliance.

α-Tocopherol-13'-carboxychromanol (α-T-13'-COOH) is an endogenously formed bioactive α-tocopherol metabolite that limits inflammation and has been proposed to exert lipid metabolism-regulatory, pro-apoptotic, and anti-tumoral properties at micromolar concentrations. The mechanisms underlying these cell stress-associated responses are, however, poorly understood. Here, we show that the induction of G0/G1 cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in macrophages triggered by α-T-13'-COOH is associated with the suppressed proteolytic activation of the lipid anabolic transcription factor sterol regulatory element-binding protein (SREBP)1 and with decreased cellular levels of stearoyl-CoA desaturase (SCD)1. In turn, the fatty acid composition of neutral lipids and phospholipids shifts from monounsaturated to saturated fatty acids, and the concentration of the stress-preventive, pro-survival lipokine 1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phospho-(1'-myo-inositol) [PI(18:1/18:1)] decreases. The selective inhibition of SCD1 mimics the pro-apoptotic and anti-proliferative activity of α-T-13'-COOH, and the provision of the SCD1 product oleic acid (C18:1) prevents α-T-13'-COOH-induced apoptosis. We conclude that micromolar concentrations of α-T-13'-COOH trigger cell death and likely also cell cycle arrest by suppressing the SREBP1-SCD1 axis and depleting cells of monounsaturated fatty acids and PI(18:1/18:1).

Euryale ferox Salisb. (prickly water lily) is the only extent of the genus Euryale that has been widely distributed in China, India, Korea, and Japan. The seeds of E. ferox (EFS) have been categorized as superior food for 2000 years in China, based on their abundant nutrients including polysaccharides, polyphenols, sesquineolignans, tocopherols, cyclic dipeptides, glucosylsterols, cerebrosides, and triterpenoids. These constituents exert multiple pharmacological effects, such as antioxidant, hypoglycemic, cardioprotective, antibacterial, anticancer, antidepression, and hepatoprotective properties. There are very few summarized reports on E. ferox, albeit with its high nutritional value and beneficial activities. Therefore, we collected the reported literature (since 1980), medical classics, database, and pharmacopeia of E. ferox, and summarized the botanical classification, traditional uses, phytochemicals, and pharmacological effects of E. ferox, which will provide new insights for further research and development of EFS-derived functional products.
